More than a Shelter

We want a home that blends with our surroundings, pays homage to the local architecture, and pulls from what we loved most about the homes we’ve owned together. It’s also important to us that our future home will be practical in retirement, yet timeless as a forever family home. We’ve always had a strong vision of what we want, but we quickly realized that we did not have a strong understanding of what it takes to build a home from ground up.

With this in mind, we began looking at resources that would be helpful in planning and organizing what we want for our future home while also having a good understanding of what’s practical from a design and build perspective.

Two resources that we found particularly helpful were books by Lester Walker titled Designing A House and American Shelter. American Shelter showcases nearly every type of home style, ranging from the beginning of time until more modern day shelters. While Designing A House clearly lays out the step-by-step process for planning home design and how decisions can impact structure, layout, site development and how it all works together.

Having a sensible guide streamlined our thought process while also bringing to mind considerations we may have not thought of previously. This allowed us to take pen to paper and layout an ideal floor plan that made sense for our family now, our future, and potential generations to enjoy.

We will share some of our processes and approaches in more posts to come and hope you’ll come back and enjoy our learning each step of the way. Subscribe to follow our journey.
