Time isn’t a luxury for every home builder, but if you have it, try to ‘experience’ the property before building, understand the cycle of seasons, and be present with the rhythm of the land if at all possible.

Etch-A-Plan
For years we had a type of house in mind that reflects the simplicity of rural design; a house that is easy to maintain while also having clean lines and bright open spaces. We are fortunate to have lived in apartments and houses with open family rooms and kitchen areas, and plenty of natural lightContinue reading “Etch-A-Plan”
More than a Shelter
We want a home that blends with our surroundings, pays homage to the local architecture, and pulls from what we loved most about the homes we’ve owned together. It’s also important to us that our future home will be practical in retirement, yet timeless as a forever family home. We’ve always had a strong visionContinue reading “More than a Shelter”
To Mill or Not to Mill?
In the previous blog “guardians of the forest” we shared our approach to forest management as we prepped the land for our future home. Another consideration we explored prior to the harvest was whether it made sense to use our own trees to build the house. We envisioned ourselves walking into a home with beamsContinue reading “To Mill or Not to Mill?”
Cat’s In the Cradle
In the post “Where we began”, we shared that our main goal is to create a legacy home, a place we can retire but also a gathering place for our families for years to come. While the “home” part is further away, the gathering place doesn’t have to be. On a couple of occasions,Continue reading “Cat’s In the Cradle “

One year ago we purchased TenirBon. It’s been an exciting personal learning journey as we’ve navigated the start of this adventure. Looking back, we’d like to share our most read and liked posts and photos over the past 365 days. Enjoy, subscribe, and continue on with us on our journey into our second year. https://tenirbonhouse.com/2022/02/06/the-perc-of-the-property/Continue reading ““525600 Minutes””
The Perc of the Property
Part 2: Walking with Jack Jack, a geological engineer before retiring, came through for us again, and nearly 80 years young, he met us at the property and walked the land to help determine soil depth and potential building sites based on his experience doing the same for NYS. Armed with a soil coring toolContinue reading “The Perc of the Property”
The Perk of the Property
Part 1: What is a perc test? We covered ‘contingencies’ in an earlier post “Not Your Average Conditions”, and ended the most recent post with the term ‘perc test’. In that earlier post, we stated our purchase contract had a contingency to perform a perc test before completing the sale. What is a perc test?Continue reading “The Perk of the Property”
Bermuda Triangle
Our recent survey led to a discovery of a secret place where no one on earth owns, our very own Bermuda triangle of sorts. We’ve mentioned the plot is old, and in the original deed we found out that it was part of 210 acre farm that was divided roughly 3 ways amongst the farmersContinue reading “Bermuda Triangle”
Survey Says?
When one buys a home, one gets an inspection; when one buys land, one gets a survey… and you get what you pay for. We hinted in a previous post that we thought we had purchased 67 acres, based on the last known survey. However, we knew it was important not to have blind faithContinue reading “Survey Says?”
